Aging in Place & Funding Resources
Small changes can make a home safer to live in for years to come. This page gathers what we know about getting that work done, and the programs that may help pay for it.
Who this is for
Maybe it's your own home. Maybe it's a parent's. Often the person arranging the work is a grown son or daughter, and sometimes they live in another state. If that's you, we can walk the house with your parent, then send you what we found and a written estimate so you can decide together.

A free written estimate
Most funding programs want a written estimate before they'll approve anything. We're glad to come out and put one together at no charge.
We don't fill out applications or manage the funding process. The organizations below do that, and most of them are free to call.
One exception worth knowing: Colorado Medicaid's home modification benefit has to be done by a contractor enrolled with the state, and we are not one. If that's the route you take, your case manager will connect you with an enrolled contractor.

Aging Resources of Douglas County
A nonprofit in Castle Rock serving Douglas County residents 60 and older. They offer free rides, help at home, some minor repairs, and help finding other resources. 303-814-4300
The Area Agency on Aging for Douglas County and the surrounding metro area. They give free information and help for adults 60 and older and people with disabilities. 303-480-6700
Colorado programs
Colorado Medicaid Home Modification Benefit
This benefit is part of Health First Colorado and is for people enrolled in certain waiver programs. It can cover ramps, bathroom changes, widened doorways, and similar work. It's arranged through a case manager.
Colorado Medicaid HCBS Waivers
An explanation of the waiver programs that help people stay in their homes, and who may qualify. The home modification benefit runs through several of them.
Douglas County Older Adult Services
The county's page for older adults, with links to human services, transportation, and local help. 303-660-7407
A free statewide housing helpline with bilingual staff. Homeowners can call to ask about help with repairs and modifications. 1-844-926-6632
For veterans
VA Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA)
For veterans whose VA health care provider says a home change is medically needed, like an entry ramp, a roll-in shower, or lowered counters. Start with your VA health care team.
VA Disability Housing Grants (SAH and SHA)
Larger grants for veterans and service members with certain service-connected disabilities, to buy, build, or adapt a home.
For rural homeowners
USDA Home Repair Loans and Grants (Section 504)
Low-interest loans for lower-income homeowners in rural areas, and grants for homeowners 62 and older to remove health and safety hazards. Whether you qualify depends on your income and whether your address counts as rural.
Programs and eligibility change, and each organization has the final word on who qualifies.
